Our Search Engine

As those of you who check your website logs on a regular basis will know, we have been crawling the Internet, and building up a substantial index of information relating to websites in the Algarve. Our cache is now in excess of 3,000 websites, over 90,000 webpages, and growing rapidly. We also currently receive over 100 new website submissions a week.

Why are we building this index? Simple. The major search engines such as Google and Yahoo, are simply far too big, and generally accessible on by computer. Users of these engines often spend hours searching for the information they require. By contrast, our search engine only indexes information relating to the Algarve.

Our search engine is also available on mobile phone, making your website accessable to people, even if they are not in front of a computer!

Our Search Engine Philosophy

The problem with the major search engines, is in the way they rank web pages. Put simply, the more money you spend on marketing, the higher your pages will rank. It is well known that people will not look beyond the first couple of pages, when searching for something, so very few websites ever receive significant traffic from these search engines.

We do things slightly differently. We reindex our website on a nightly basis, so that the results someone receives one day, will not be the same the following day. This means that your site will receive the exposure it deserves, if you follow a few simple rules which are common to all the major search engines, Google, MSN and Yahoo included.

The Golden Search Engine Rules

• To check if your site is listed, and which pages we are currently caching, from the Discover the Algarve search box, type: site:www.yourwebsite.com
• ALWAYS give each page a unique Page Title that acurately describes the contents of the page.
• Do not make the title more than 150 characters. If you do, you will be immediately marked down by all the major search engines.
• Always include a <Meta> Description for your page, and make sure that the description relates to that page, not the Website as a whole. Many websites do this and are always marked down accordingly.
• Make sure that your <Meta> Keywords relate to the content of your webpage.Never use the same keywords on every page. Again, many websites do this and are marked down accordingly.
• Do not use Flash on your front page to access a website, without putting in a normal HTML link. Most Search Engines do not read Flash, so they will never be able to enter your site! This is one of the most common reasons for websites having a single entry in a search engine. (Note: The Discover the Algarve search engine, and Google, can read some flash but this functionality is limited. It is therefore best to avoid using this type of front page).
• Do not design your whole site in Flash for exactly the same reasons! It looks pretty, but does not achieve what you are trying to do, namely to attract more traffic to your website.
• Do not use scripting for navigation. The search engines invariably disregard it. Search engines do not run the scripts embedded in your page, they simply look at the HTML code behind it. If you use scripting to link one page to another, it is usually ignored.
• Make sure your website conforms to best practice when authoring your pages. We regularly see Title tags with line breaks, <a href> tags with several whitespace characters between the a and the href. The list is endless. Use a good authoring tool such as Adobe Dreamweaver.
• If your page contains accented characters (Portuguese German etc), always embed the character set code in your web page, do not rely on your web server to do it. All search engines will have to make a best guess if your page or webserver does not do this. Invariably this will default to English so accented characters will not be displayed as you would wish them to appear!
